A Sea Witch Enjoys Youmacon
Happy Birthday Weekend to… ME!
What you may not know; Nov. 1st is my Birthday. Youmacon is both an anime convention in my eyes, but also a birthday convention too. As silly as that may sound! Plus; you have to love a convention of this size being only 20 minutes away from my home; meaning non-anime friends can meet up downtown for festivities after the hall closes.
Day Zero: A Nightmare Before Youmacon (Thurdsday)
We took a different approach to Youmacon this year; unlike last year. Last year (2018) we were pulling all-nighters getting ready for Youmacon’s first international competitions. It left me exhausted and I was barely able to fully enjoy my time/$$ spent on the weekend. I still wanted to compete; but without having to create a large workbook full of forma progress photos/write ups. This year we competed in the Master’s Class, Hallway Cosplay Contest.
Day One: Friday
After mulling things over; we decided to take Vaness, my Human Ursula cosplay, and give her some upgrades. Previously; I had made Ursula for my judging appearance at Michigan Comic Con this year – It is rather comfortable. Also, I was able to design, digitize, and embroider my first project. It was a simple 2 seashell pattern. Yay for technique growth.
Here is a look at Vanessa’s poopsies. Flotsam and Jetsam make the perfect shawl. Just like in the movie; when they tip over the boat and slap tails together. Vanessa’s eel tails wrap around one another too!! They snap together and are detachable/can be separated. Just incase they have some mischief to instigate!
We even created her movie pieces… merfolk garden-seaweed and a contract + pen. The Fish-Bone pen is actually a sharpie. There is a second page to the contract that we were having friends sign. *insert evil cackle here*
The sea witch was able to walk away with a hand full of voices/souls!
Day Two: Saturday
Huge thank you to @theastronomicon for the shout out on their 11/6/19 youtube video; go check it out if you haven’t already! So much love for a convention that supports cosplayers, like they do!!Vanessa, our Human Ursula, took home Best Masters Hall at @youmaconoffical last weekend. We were so busy this season and super happy that Vanessa’s flawless sewing was recognized.
